Punjab Pushes Self-Employment as 600 Mini Bus Operators Receive Permits in Chandigarh

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announces the distribution of permits to nearly 600 mini bus operators in Chandigarh, taking the total past 1,100. The initiative aims to promote self-employment, create sustainable livelihoods, and strengthen dignity and economic independence among ordinary households.

In a move aimed at strengthening grassroots livelihoods and expanding self-employment opportunities, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday announced the distribution of permits to nearly 600 mini bus operators in Chandigarh. The initiative, targeted largely at individuals from ordinary households, is part of the state government’s broader effort to promote economic independence through sustainable transport-based employment.

Addressing the development, Mann said the latest round of permits takes the total number issued by the state government to over 1,100 so far. He underscored that the policy is designed to integrate small operators into the formal transport system while ensuring dignified means of income for families that have traditionally remained outside large-scale commercial operations.

According to the Chief Minister, the mini bus permit scheme is not merely a transport reform but a socio-economic intervention. By enabling individuals to operate legally and independently, the government aims to generate steady employment, reduce dependency on irregular work, and restore a sense of dignity and financial security among beneficiaries. The permits allow operators to earn a livelihood through regulated public transport services, while also contributing to improved connectivity.

Mann reiterated that the Aam Aadmi Party-led government is committed to empowering people through self-reliance rather than temporary assistance. He emphasized that policies centered on self-employment create long-term impact by building confidence, stability, and respect for work among citizens.

The distribution of permits in Chandigarh marks another step in Punjab’s ongoing administrative efforts to align transport policy with employment generation. Officials view the initiative as a practical model for inclusive growth, blending regulatory oversight with economic opportunity. As more permits are rolled out, the government expects the scheme to play a meaningful role in boosting local employment while strengthening the state’s public transport ecosystem.
